Contractor Accountants Built for Your Limited Company

Tech Accounting is a specialist contractor accountancy firm. We act only for contractors who work through their own limited company outside IR35, which means the advice fits your situation the first time, not the third.

One fixed fee of £120 a month plus VAT covers everything, FreeAgent is included free, and your accountant is part of a team of ex-PwC accountants and former IT contractors at an ICAEW member firm.

Accountants for Contractors
Across the UK

Tech Accounting was built for IT and tech contractors, and the same service suits engineering, project management, finance, change and consulting contractors: anyone billing a day rate through a limited company they own (a personal service company, or PSC) on contracts outside IR35, anywhere in the UK. Wherever you are based, the service is the same. If you are an IT contractor, our accountants for IT contractors page is written for you specifically.

If you are paid through an umbrella company you are on PAYE, so there is no company for us to look after. Not sure which route suits you? Our guide to PAYE vs umbrella vs limited company compares them, and the contractor take-home pay calculator shows what each means for your day rate.

Why Contractors Choose
a Specialist Firm

A high-street accountant looks after shops, landlords and tradespeople, and a contractor’s company is a small part of their week.
The advice tends to be generic as a result.

Specialist accounting for contractors is different because the same situations come up every day. Working with a specialist means:

Built Around Contracting

Day-rate income that stops between contracts, expenses for working on client sites, pensions paid through the company: the questions a contractor’s company raises are the ones we answer every day.

Paid Outside IR35, Run as a Business

When your contracts are outside IR35 your company is paid gross and taxed as a business. We do not decide your status, but everything that follows from it (Corporation Tax, VAT, salary and dividends) is done right. Our IR35 guide explains the rules.

More of Your Day Rate Kept

The gap between what you bill and what you keep comes down to salary level, dividend timing and the expenses you claim. We review all three when you join and again at every year end.

Ask Before You Commit

Unlimited access to your accountant by phone and email. Ask about a new contract, a piece of kit or a pension payment before you commit, and get a clear answer from someone who has seen it before.

FreeAgent for Free

Every Tech Accounting client gets full access to FreeAgent as part of the monthly fee. FreeAgent is cloud accounting software built for contractors and small businesses, and it is the platform we run your books on. Paying for it directly would normally cost you up to £330 a year.

Bank feeds bring your transactions in automatically. Invoicing comes with day-rate and time-based templates and payment tracking. Expenses are captured from your phone when you are on site, and a live tax timeline shows what is due and when.

You get a real-time view of profit, cash and what you can take as dividends, wherever you are working. We are certified FreeAgent Partners, so setup and any migration from your current software is handled for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do contractor accountants cost?

Tech Accounting’s contractor accounting services cost a fixed £120 a month plus VAT, with your first month at £60. That covers year-end accounts, the Corporation Tax return, quarterly VAT returns, bookkeeping, payroll for one director, P11D and P60, your personal Self Assessment return, year-round tax advice and FreeAgent. Many firms quote a similar headline fee and add extras; we do not.

What does a contractor accountant do that a normal accountant does not?

The compliance work is the same: accounts, tax returns, VAT and payroll. The difference is context. A contractor accountant understands IR35, day-rate income, working on client sites, gaps between contracts and how to pay yourself from a one-person company, because that is all they do.

Do you only work with IT contractors?

IT and tech contractors are who we built the firm for and the team’s own background, and the service is the same for any contractor trading through a limited company outside IR35: engineering, project and programme management, finance, change and consulting included.

Do I need a limited company to work with you?

Yes. Our service is company accounting. If you are paid through an umbrella or directly on PAYE, there is nothing for us to do for you, and our PAYE vs umbrella vs limited company guide explains when a limited company makes sense.

Can you help with IR35?

We act for contractors working outside IR35 and understand how the rules affect the way your company is paid and taxed. We do not determine or defend your IR35 status; that sits between you and your client. Our IR35 guide explains how status is decided.

What should I look for in a contractor accountant?

A fixed fee that lists exactly what is included, contractor-specific experience (ask how many of their clients contract through a limited company), software you can use from your phone, and a named accountant you can actually reach. Check the firm is regulated by a professional body such as the ICAEW.
